It is beginning to look like spring on the farm. The trees are budding out and the comfrey is growing beautifully. I especially like comfrey because it is easy to grow, hardy, and is a multipurpose herb. For the garden, it is a nitrogen fixer and the leaves can be chopped and dropped around the base of other plants as a green fertilizer. Beyond it’s benefits for the garden, it is also known for it’s healing properties. It is excellent in healing scrapes, scratches, and bruising, but it heals the skin so quickly, it should not be used for large open injuries. When preparing comfrey, I love to infuse the dried comfrey into organic coconut oil because coconut oil is an antimicrobial that fights infection. The two combined make a wonderful healing salve. Directions: infuse 1.5 cups of coconut oil with 1 cup of dried, chopped comfrey at 100 degrees fahrenheit for 24 to 36 hours. After straining, add about an ounce of beeswax and put into a sterilized, dark glass container. After it is cooled down, add the lid and enjoy the healing properties of this salve.
Additional complimentary dried herbs include: elderflower, plantain, yarrow, self heal, and St. Johns
